Vision
The Smart Cities SIG aims to provide a collaborative and implementation-neutral environment where municipalities, industry participants, academia, standards organizations, and ecosystem contributors can work together to identify, refine, validate, and align interoperability needs and reusable profile requirements across smart city ecosystems.
The initiative is intended to help municipalities bring real operational needs, business requirements, use cases, and interoperability challenges into open ecosystem discussions supported by practical Proof of Concept activities and collaborative analysis.
Through this collaboration model, the Smart Cities SIG seeks to:
- reduce ecosystem fragmentation,
- improve interoperability alignment,
- encourage reusable interoperability approaches,
- support semantic and standards mappings,
- and enable practical ecosystem collaboration across organizational and technical boundaries.
Rather than acting as a centralized standards authority or prescribing technical solutions, the Smart Cities SIG operates as a lightweight interoperability coordination and requirements incubation environment where participating organizations can collaboratively analyze interoperability challenges, validate reusable approaches, and contribute findings, requirements, clarifications, and lessons learned back into their respective standards organizations, industry groups, and related ecosystem initiatives where appropriate.
The initiative is intended to remain:
- collaborative,
- implementation-neutral,
- practical,
- reusable,
- and execution-focused.
Initial activities focus on:
- Smart Lighting
- Water / Smart Water Metering
while establishing reusable collaboration and interoperability approaches that may support additional smart city domains in future phases.
The Smart Cities SIG recognizes that successful smart city interoperability requires coordination across municipalities, standards organizations, industry participants, and ecosystem initiatives, and aims to provide a practical and reusable foundation for that collaboration.
